I'm a Network Design Engineer who is passionate about crafting robust and efficient network solutions. My career has focused primarily on IT within the UK Higher Education sector, where I've developed a comprehensive understanding of its specific demands and challenges, over the past 17 years. I have also worked in the private sector, delivering solutions around the UK, as well as in Europe and the Far East.

I specialize in IP Voice, Wireless, and Data network solutions, and I'm committed to delivering exceptional results on every project. My work has allowed me to cultivate a strong blend of technical and interpersonal skills.

Outside of work, my interests lie in reading and technology. I often spend my time lost in a good sci-fi novel or actively building and experimenting with virtualized networks in my home lab.

Work Experience

Network Design Specialist 2022 - 2025

I led the design and deployment of a major campus-wide network refresh, replacing legacy Brocade hardware with Aruba CX (6300, 8300 series) solutions. This overhaul significantly improved network performance, security, and scalability. I also managed the migration of connectivity to existing Cisco and Fortinet devices, ensuring seamless integration with core routers and firewalls. I developed and presented both high- and low-level technical designs to senior management and technical staff, successfully gaining buy-in and aligning technical teams through strong communication and negotiation skills.
I played a key role in a strategic project to migrate the organization's legacy ISDN voice connectivity to a BT Cloud SIP solution. This initiative delivered significant benefits, including cost savings, enhanced scalability, and improved resilience. By moving a critical business function from outdated technology to a modern, cloud-based platform, I ensured the business was prepared for future needs.

Infrastructure Systems Engineer 2019 - 2022

I have designed and deployed wired and wireless network solutions globally, including Cisco Meraki, Ruckus, and UniFi systems. My work includes implementing bespoke network architectures, such as deploying Meraki appliances within Microsoft Azure. I also led network infrastructure refresh projects, migrating legacy hardware like Cisco Catalyst 2960/3850 switches to modern Catalyst 9000X series switches across the UK and Europe. Additionally, I advised on and created network architectures for Building Management Systems (BMS) in new intelligent buildings.
I also provided 3rd-line escalation support to a diverse range of clients, troubleshooting complex issues across various vendor platforms, including Cisco, Meraki, Aruba, Juniper, and Extreme. My responsibilities also included network monitoring using tools like the Meraki Dashboard, Solarwinds, and Paessler PRTG, and partnering directly with third-party vendors to deliver comprehensive network solutions.

Senior Infrastructure Systems Engineer 2015 - 2019

I served as the Service Owner for a Cisco Unified Communications platform, where I designed and implemented a migration from an outdated Siemens ISDN voice network to a modern Cisco Call Manager IP PBX with SIP uplinks. This strategic project resulted in approximately £70,000 in annual cost savings. As a Technical Lead, I managed and delivered new build projects, including the corporate data networks for the new Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in Birmingham UK.
I was responsible for managing and troubleshooting network infrastructure, from core switches to access layer devices. This included managing Cisco Core switches, Nexus Data Centre switches, and a range of Cisco access layer switches. I am an expert in network protocols like BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, and MPLS, applying them to ensure seamless interconnectivity.
